About Xeptix Labs

A small software shop with one job — make your work easier.

Xeptix Labs is a small services shop in Central Ohio, founded in 2023 by Jonathan Barry. We build the custom software, automations, websites, and hosting that businesses and individuals actually need — without the agency markup, the kickoff theater, or the "let's circle back" energy.

The story

Why Xeptix Labs exists.

Most small businesses and individuals don't need an agency. They need a developer who'll listen, scope honestly, and actually ship.

I've been writing software for 15 years — the kind that ships behind login screens, runs on a schedule, and keeps a business moving without anyone thinking about it. Most of the projects you'll find on the portfolio started as someone sending me a paragraph that began with "I don't know if this is even possible, but…"

Xeptix Labs is the operating name for that work. We're deliberately small — fewer than ten people total, and the engineering is done by the people who actually talk to whoever the work is for. When projects need hands beyond the core team, we lean on a tight bench of vetted contractors we've built long-term relationships with — same standards, same direct communication, same expectation that the person doing the work knows why. No account managers, no producers, no calendar gymnastics. Project sizes range from a single evening's fix to multi-month builds — the contractor bench is what lets the small ones stay small and the big ones get the depth they need. Quotes are flat-rate. Pricing lives in the signed agreement, not in moving goalposts. If a project isn't a fit, we'll tell you that and (when we can) point you at someone who is.

We're based in Central Ohio — mail and packages reach us at Xeptix Labs LLC, 1985 W. Henderson Rd., Suite 1229, Columbus, OH 43220-2401. The work itself is location-agnostic: most of our clients are elsewhere in the U.S., communication is asynchronous- first, and we hop on video calls when they actually move things forward.

How we got here

Three years of private practice, then the doors opened.

Xeptix Labs didn't appear at the public-launch announcement. It existed, took clients, and shipped — quietly — for three years before opening up to a broader audience.

2023

Started taking it seriously.

Programming-for-hire shifted from side work to the focus. We began doing private deals directly with industries and communities — most under NDA, never publicly listed, but real clients with real production work. The portfolio you see today is the slice that's been cleared for the shop window; plenty stays behind it.

2026

Went public.

Opened the doors more broadly — the marketing site, a public quote flow, the support knowledgebase, the newsletter. Same way of working as the first three years, just available to people we haven't met yet.

Track record

Five disciplines, fifteen years.

The work didn't start with Xeptix Labs — the company captured a body of practice that had been quietly accumulating for over a decade. Here's the breakdown.

Since 2011

Game development

From small solo builds to large-scale studio operations. Engine work, gameplay systems, content pipelines, and the live-ops infrastructure that keeps player communities running.

Since 2012

Websites & web apps

Marketing sites, web apps, and the back-office tools that keep them honest. Operated and contributed to several online communities and the moderation, automation, and admin layers behind them.

Since 2015

Desktop applications

Native and cross-platform utilities for the kinds of tasks a browser tab can't quite handle — automation, file/system work, and the small-but-critical tools that pin a workflow together.

Since 2016

Servers & backend ops

Setting servers up, keeping them alive, and managing them. Provisioning, monitoring, patching, backups, and being the person on call when an alert actually matters.

Since 2018

Freelance for hire

A decade of programming for hire across industries — from solo founders shipping a first idea to established teams plugging a specific gap nobody else wanted to own.

The portfolio is a slice, not the whole story.

/portfolio shows a curated, public-facing selection — projects we own, can talk about, and have permission to credit. Plenty of the work behind those fifteen years lives elsewhere: internal tooling, white-label builds, NDA-bound systems, communities we operated, and engagements in industries where naming clients isn't appropriate. Xeptix Labs is a newer venture; the practice is not. If your project overlaps with something we've shipped privately, ask — we can usually share enough context to be useful without breaking confidentiality.

How we work

Four principles that won't move.

These show up in every contract, every estimate, every invoice — because if they didn't, we'd be a different shop.

We tell you no when no is right.

If your project isn't a fit — too small, too big, wrong stack, or just not something we can do well — we'll say so up front. A mismatched engagement is a slow-motion bad outcome for both sides.

Flat-rate quotes, no moving goalposts.

You get a real number before any work starts. Reasonable revisions are baked in. If scope changes meaningfully, we talk it through and re-quote in writing — never a surprise on the invoice.

You talk to the person doing the work.

No account managers, no producers, no "let me check with the team." Direct email and video when it helps. Decisions land fast because the person making them is the person typing the code.

Boring tools, mostly.

We pick tech that's been around long enough to be debuggable at 2 AM. New shiny is fun for hobbyists; production code carries other people's livelihoods, so it gets the safe, well-trodden path.
